Job Description
“The Ryerson Student Centre offers space, restaurants and conference services for the Ryerson Community. The Restaurant Manager provides leadership and support for the restaurant operations.
The Manager shall be responsible for the following areas and tasks:
Restaurant Operations:
Responsible for managing all the restaurants within and related to the Student Centre including the Oakham Café and the Ram in the Rye, in accordance with the Student Centre’s policies, procedures, and strategic direction.
Establish, maintain and evaluate relationships with vendors/suppliers to ensure that all outlets within the Student Centre are receiving the best quality and service possible.
Oversee and approve the purchase of all restaurant related supplies and beverage/alcohol inventory.
Assist the Kitchen Manager/Chef and the General Manager with the development of the menus, and/or daily/weekly/monthly specials for the restaurant operations.
Keep abreast of new products, services and trends within the restaurant/bar industry.
In conjunction with the Finance Manager, ensure systems are in place for the accurate tracking of inventories.
As a member of Management, participate and provide advice in the development of strategic plans, capital purchases plans, and the annual operating budget for the Student Centre.
Provides advice and recommendations to the General Manager on the restaurant operations including any contracts and agreements related thereto, and the delivery of new services and products in response to student and client needs and wants.
Ensure the overall function, appearance and well-being of the facilities and work to maintain a positive image and friendly student atmosphere.
Create and maintain a maintenance program for restaurant equipment and facilities.
Ensure accurate data related to revenues and expenses is provided in a timely manner to the Manager of Finance and General Manager.
Act as an effective ambassador for the Employer.
Other duties as assigned.
Staff Relations:
In conjunction with the General Manager, responsible for employee relations within the restaurant operations including recruitment, hiring, promotion/demotion, discipline, discharge and related matters in accordance with the Collective Agreement and Student Centre policies and procedures.
Create a positive team atmosphere among restaurant staff.
Review, verify and provide the Finance Manager Payroll information in a timely manner.
Schedule all restaurant staff on weekly basis in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
In conjunction with Management, develop and oversee the implementation of training plans for restaurant staff related to customer service, cash handling procedures, health and safety, risk management and liquor liability.
Marketing and Programming:
In conjunction with the General Manager, coordinate events and programming within the restaurant operations.
In conjunction with the General Manager, coordinate all marketing and social media activities for the restaurant operations.
In conjunction with the General Manager, work with the on-campus student unions and student groups as necessary to ensure that programming in the restaurants meets students’ expectations and needs.
Risk Management:
Ensure all internal-controls and procedures related to cash handling and loss-reduction are implemented. Addresses any related issues that may arise in a timely and effective manner.
Legal:
Ensure compliance of all restaurant operations with the applicable laws of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto including but not limited to the regulations provided by Toronto Public Health, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and the Ministry of Health. Coordinate issues related to the Student Centre’s liquor license, including communicating with the Ryerson University License Holder as required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum 5 years’ experience of Restaurant Manager experience;
Experience supervising full and part time staff in a unionized environment is essential;
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work within deadlines in a multi-faceted work environment;
Superior oral and written communication;
Dedication, commitment and a willingness to work flexible hours and overtime when necessary;
Strong planning and time management skills;
Able to prioritize multiple tasks;
Able to work independently and as a member of a team;
Food Handlers certification an asset.
